National Pension System (NPS) was introduced for Central Govt employees joining service from 1st January 2004. Subsequently many state govts also notified NPS for their employees from the specified dates. NPS is a defined contribution pension system administered and regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), India. Since May 2009 the NPS has also been extended to all citizens including in the private sector and the unorganised sector. It enables its subscribers to make systematic investments during their active working life so as to draw pension post retirement.
